Pupils' march
After completing the art workshops, the pupils prepared for the Pupils' March. The march started from X-Bowling in the direction of the Elefsina Town Hall. The march was dynamic, pulse-pounding and lively with pupils shouting slogans throughout the march. Holding banners and pickets with messages about climate change and climate neutrality, they gave the message about the climate crisis and its impact on our daily lives.
The slogans of the children in the march came from the messages freely created by the children of the picket making workshop and were in English. Twenty-five pickets had the letters "FOR A CLIMATE NEUTRAL ELEUSIS" written on one side and on the other side slogans with proposals for a climate neutral Elefsina.

Giving a resolution to the Municipal Authority
The march concluded in front of the Town Hall with the delivery of the results of the pupils' group consultation to the Municipal Authority by a delegation of pupils who read the petition:
"Dear Mayor,
on the second day of the conference, after the presentation of the proposals from each group, we gathered all the ideas for the development of Elefsina, presented in this letter. Starting with the issue of industry and energy, factories should stop running on fossil fuels. We should be using LED lights and automated lighting systems, rooftop PV, geothermal central heating and solar water heaters. On the issue of the coastal area, the most important issues are biological waste treatment, increased greenery and tree planting, removal of old ships and wrecks from the seabed, a ban on dumping toxic waste into the sea, a proper sewage system and removal of toxic waste from the seabed, and appropriate environmental education programmes. Another issue discussed was buildings and how they could be made more energy efficient. We should turn old industrial buildings into cultural spaces, archaeological or industrial museums, homes for the homeless, sports centres and spaces for talks and meetings. Most importantly, however, we should incorporate greenery such as trees and flowers in gardens, green roofs and green walls, and have good insulation. Regarding the sea, we propose the removal of old ships and wrecks from the seabed, regular inspection of ships, development of fisheries and improvement of sea transport to Athens. In addition, as regards mobility, we propose the installation of stairs on the roads, the installation of solar panels on traffic lights, the invention/installation of sound-light mechanisms for the hearing impaired, the promotion of the use of electric scooters or bicycles, electric buses, trolleys, trains, suburban railways and underground electric metro. We also propose to provide bicycle parking spaces in schools, promote walking and provide government funds to give disabled people access to necessary equipment. In terms of waste, it is vital that it is reduced, recycled and reused, particularly through the use of recycled paper, reducing the amount of food we consume and throw away, and reusing clothes, books and toys. In addition, with regard to heritage, we suggest widening wooden paths, informing visitors, installing guardrails, adding reminders (such as "Don't touch - heritage needs protection"), providing braille signs and offering audio messages for the visually impaired. We also recommend providing wheelchairs with lifts and installing lifts for people with disabilities. Finally, in terms of nutrition and agriculture, we propose the use of hydroponic methods, support for local farmers and the production of local dairy products, the creation of urban vegetable gardens in public spaces and rooftops, planting fruit trees on pavements, reducing meat consumption, composting waste, providing fruit and juice and providing healthy food in school canteens. It is also important to avoid the use of pesticides. Along with this resolution we are providing you with a list of proposals on the above issues for the areas of Vlycha, the Coastal Front, Kronos, Iris and the Archaeological Site. We hope you will consider these proposals for a better and climate-neutral Elefsina. And please, when we leave here, don't forget them! Thank you for your help and support, for your contribution to the success of our pupils conference. All the pupils of the conference for the Transition to a Climate Neutral Future Elefsina, 11 May 2023" |
